Mission-driven apps should still be great apps

Published on Dec 5, 2021

We were so proud and humbled last week to learn that Empathy was named one of Google Play’s Best Apps of 2021, in the category Best Apps for Good. It is so gratifying to be recognized as an app with a mission at its core, built to solve a real and persistent problem that people face at one of the worst times in their lives. And we hope to be an example to others who want to really help people create the solutions that they want to see in the world.

When we started Empathy, there were 5 different apps you could download to order pizza without having to interact with a human being, but none to help bereaved families cut through the miles of red tape and cut down on the dozens of hours they’d spend closing their loved one’s accounts and probating their estate. So we brought together a dream team made up of the greatest minds in consumer tech, grief counseling, estate law, financial services, journalism and more. Not only because entrenched cultural issues need smart, innovative solutions, but also because we believe families with real problems deserve well-made apps with clever logic and beautiful UI, just as much as people who want their pizza on-demand do.

We’re eagerly working to make our solution and our app experience even better and more seamless day by day—as we’re looking forward to seeing what the next great mission-driven minds in apps will do to solve more problems for more people.
