The Cost of Loss: The UK’s Bereavement Burden

Our new UK study reveals how bereavement is reshaping expectations for insurers and employers, and highlights the gap between the support people need and the help they receive.

Drawing on a nationally representative study of 4,751 adults across the UK, this report uncovers how bereavement is reshaping expectations of insurers, while driving new pressures and needs within the workplace—and what organisations can do to better support their people and policyholders.

1 in 3
beneficiaries reported feeling under-supported in the claims process during an emotionally difficult time, a figure that rises to almost 1 in 2 (46%) among Gen Z.
57%
of respondents would choose insurers based on bereavement support, and 92% value bereavement benefits highly—including 100% of Gen Z.
48%
of bereaved employees would leave their job over inadequate support—including a striking 74% of Gen Z.
